One of my favorite birds is the Hummingbird. It’s so acrobatic, so tiny and fragile looking, yet so resilient, strong and fierce. It’s so colorful, and the enamel jewelry artist in me had to paint it. Once in watercolors, I knew I had to paint it in vitreous enamels, creating a colorful piece of cloisonné jewelry.
Taking my painting, the lines and the colors, into my goldsmith studio, I used 24k gold wire to recreate the cloisonné lines. Then applying the enamels on the fine silver and gold piece. Slowly layer after layer, using my Japanese enameling brush, and only 3 grains at a time, I placed the colors in each gold cell, careful to create depth and movement.
The reds of the flowers depict my love and passion for our beautiful and colorful planet. The blues of the sky show how tranquil I feel when I spy this bird. Yet, the blue also depicts the hummingbird’s strength and hardiness, which I respect about it so much. In completing this beautiful piece, I could see more movement to it, so I added a garnet, set in 18k gold, to dangle below, representing the flight of this intrepid avian.
This unique jewelry design is found nowhere else. Being able to create enamel jewelry that is one of a kind gold jewelry is my passion.
