Hibiscus are large, exotic flowers that are native to tropical regions throughout the world. Just as with the flowering plants, this midnight blue and red hibiscus cloisonné pendant is vibrant and full of color. It’s a custom jewel any tropical flower enthusiast would be proud to wear.
I created this treasured jewelry pendant in 1995 for a Canadian client. My client wanted me to create a custom jewelry piece that would be a stark contrast to the long, frigid Canadian winters. The dinnerplate-sized blooms of the Hibiscus seemed to be a perfect fit for this request.
I thought the midnight blue enamel backdrop was a fitting color to represent the cold months of the Canadian provinces. I painted yellow and red Hibiscus flowers to represent the warm and sunny climates where the flowering species is prolific.
Red hibiscus flowers are also a symbol of passion and love. The red enamels used in this custom piece are transparent. I purposefully used translucent enamel because I wanted the sparkle of the fine silver behind the enamel to create a vibrant, illuminating color palette and work of art in this cloisonné jewel piece.
Red is the most difficult color of enamel to work with. While many jewelry artists use copper instead of silver, I avoid doing so. Colors just don’t reflect as vividly on copper. I also believe in using the finest materials available when making my custom jewels.
For added opulence, I set this cloisonné masterpiece in 18K gold.
As a jewelry designer, I can create just about anything. Custom jewelry should be as unique as you are.
Whether you want a similar cloisonné pendant to this midnight blue hibiscus jewelry or a more demure and understated jewelry piece, I can design exactly what you’re looking for.
